True crime author Tom Basinski has a new book out from Berkley True Crime in January. It concerns the case of convicted murderer Mark Elder and is titled Cross-Country Evil: The Shocking True Story of an Eighteen-Year Manhunt for a Killer on the Run [Amazon; B&N].
The book follows a dogged, nearly two-decade investigation; the author is an experienced homicide detective [see the Clews interview]. The case features some amazing details, such as the method used to obtain the suspect's DNA from a half-smoked joint.
The title of the book was recently changed. A bookseller refused to stock the book under the original title, Cross Country Rapist.
Curious. True crime titles are tricky. Usually when a true crime story has its title changed, it's to make the title more sensational, not less so. A TV show originally called Murder on Chapel Hill Road becomes Sex, Lies, and the Doctor's Wife.
What's next - no more "SHOCKING PHOTOS"?! Well, I suppose that's the case. I've seen more plain-old INCLUDES PHOTOS lately on the true crime shelf.
The true crime publishers -- shying away from shock value!? Maturing, along with the tastes and sensibilities of their fans? Well, we can hope.
