In addition to offering awards for the best true crime title of the year, the Mystery Writers of America also offers an award for the best critical works in the mystery and true crime genres. This year, five titles were nominated:
African American Mystery Writers: A Historical and Thematic Study by Frankie Y. Bailey (McGarland & Co.) [Amazon; B&N ]
Hard-Boiled Sentimentality: The Secret History of American Crime Fiction by Leonard Cassuto (Columbia University Press) [Amazon; B&N]
Scene of the Crime: The Importance of Place in Crime and Mystery Fiction by David Geherin (McFarland & Co.) [Amazon; B&N]
The Rise of True Crime: 20th-Century Murder and American Popular Culture by Jean Murley (Greenwood Publishing - Praeger) [Amazon; B&N]
Edgar Allan Poe : An Illustrated Companion to His Tell-Tale Stories by Dr. Harry Lee Poe (Sterling Publishing) [Amazon; B&N]
Needless to say, I have a favorite.
It's good to see two from McFarland on the list!
